Smith v. Alabama

124 U.S. 465 (1888)

An 1888 United States Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld an Alabama law that required all locomotive engineers operating in the state to be licensed by a state board of examiners.  The Court held that the state law did not violate the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution because it regulated an area where diverse local regulation, instead of uniform national regulation, was desirable.
