Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson

President Andrew Johnson is the only president to be impeached pursuant to Article II, § 4, of the United States Constitution.  Johnson was impeached in 1867 for firing the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, in violation of the Tenure in Office Act which had declared such firing a “high misdemeanor.”  The House of Representatives impeached Johnson, but he avoided removal by just one vote in the Senate.
