Special education is a type of education designed for students who may need supplementary help to succeed as students. It is also intended for students who cannot thrive in an ordinary classroom environment. All children in the US, even those lacking the mental abilities to undertake education that is more advanced are entitled to get an education.

.
Some special educational programs provide separate classrooms for students incapable of being in a regular school setting. Special education services also help children in dealing with a specific issue. For example, speech therapy is offered for those with speech delays, while students having physical problems can receive courses of special occupational therapy. In certain grammar schools, students attend their normal classes but may be segregated later in order for them to obtain services that they need.

Autistic students occasionally work with special aides inside the classroom so all work are mainstreamed. Special education is not a sign that the mental abilities of a child are poor. In some cases, exceptionally smart children receive services to assist them in better handling the school environment.

Special education services can take place even before kindergarten. The Special Education Local Plan Area, commonly known as SELPA, may be called if parents have any concerns regarding speech or physical delays of a child and any other critical health issues. By state and federal law, students who appear to develop any risk of developmental delays or those eligible by having any serious health problem must be tested by SELPA.

SELPA invites children who are discovered to have substantial variance from their peers to take part in SELPA preschools, free of charge. Teachers can accordingly address deficiencies two years prior to kindergarten. Another option to preschool would be therapy programs such as speech therapy.

Adults with considerable cognitive disabilities may also join in programs helping them be more self-reliant and improving their living skills. Free programs such as these can assist adults possessing cognitive impairment attain freedom that is more personal.

Students enrolled in these special programs follow an individualized education plan or IEP. The plan sets certain goals and accommodations as needed by the student. Both the parents and the people involved with the school like teachers and counselors contribute and participate in identifying areas where a child may need assistance.

At present, there is still some concern about special education modification mainly at middle and high school level. Laws in certain states do not permit students to deviate from the normal curriculum and obtain a diploma. Parents complain about certain schools that do not allow students with particular needs from using adaptive aids. Schools in California do not allow dyslexic students the use of calculators in exit examinations even if they have difficulty in memorizing multiplication tables. Even if the student excels in math, passing high school may not be possible because this adaptation is presently not permitted.

The parents of these said children along with special education teachers continuously work in order to modify rules that are uncompromising to someone who requires modifications. Special education teachers exert effort to help students develop skills needed to keep at par with their peers and if possible, graduate successfully from high school.
