Fee-Splitting

The term fee splitting refers to a practice where an attorney splits the fees for a case with another lawyer who referred the case to the first attorney.  The term also is used to the practice where multiple lawyers from different firms who are working together on a case split among themselves the fees generated by that case.  In most states, an attorney is prohibited from splitting fees with a non-attorney.
